Extended Warranty Question!

Howdy folks,

I bought a 2017 John Deere 6130M about four months ago through JE Brokerage LLC. Around two months in, I started noticing some odd behavior with the transmission. Thankfully it was still under the included warranty — one quick call to JE Brokerage, a $50 co-pay, and they had it fixed within a week. Great service!

Now I've got about two months of warranty left, and I'm thinking about an extended plan. Would you recommend going through JE Brokerage directly, or should I shop around with independent warranty companies? I'd love to hear what's worked for others.

Thanks in advance!
Sarah

Sarah, here's my two cents: ask JE Brokerage for an extended warranty quote, and also get a couple from reputable providers like MachineryGuard or TractorShield. Then compare the coverage side-by-side. Key things to look at:

  • What's covered on the transmission and hydraulics?
  • Any waiting period or response time guarantees?
  • OEM parts vs. aftermarket?
  • Exclusions specific to farming operations

That way you'll know exactly what you're getting. Good luck!

We bought our first tractor through JE Brokerage too. Honestly, I'd lean toward extending through them. They move a lot of farm equipment, so I suspect they get better rates from warranty providers. Plus, if something goes wrong, they handle everything — scheduling with certified techs, processing paperwork, paying the shop directly. During planting season, that kind of support is invaluable. Peace of mind matters when downtime costs you $1,000 a day!

I'll offer a different perspective — extended warranties aren't always worth it. The math is simple: these companies make money because they pay out less in claims than they collect. Anything major would likely show up during the original warranty period. My advice? Set aside the premium money in a dedicated repair fund, stick to the maintenance schedule religiously, and learn to spot small issues before they turn into big ones. The 6130M is a solid machine if you treat it right.

I'm with HarvestHank. Last year, JE Brokerage's extended warranty was about $580 annually, while the cheapest third-party quote I found was $765 — and that didn't include the same level of coverage. One thing I like about going through them: they use John Deere's official extended warranty program, so local dealerships honor it without any hassle. Definitely get a few quotes, but don't be surprised if JE Brokerage has the best deal.

Thanks everyone — this is super helpful! I'll definitely get a few quotes and compare. The point about JE Brokerage using John Deere's own program is compelling because we have a great local Deere dealership I trust. AgriTech, you make a fair point about setting aside money, but since this is our first "big" tractor purchase, the peace of mind is valuable while we're still learning. I'll circle back with what I decide!

From my experience, JE Brokerage's extended warranty has been a lifesaver. On our 2015 Case IH, we had two major repairs covered that would have been over $8,000 out of pocket. Just make sure to check if they cover "field service" — getting a 13,000 lb tractor towed to a shop is no joke if it breaks down in the middle of a field. Also think about how many hours you put on it per year; if you're running 500+ hours annually, longer coverage might be worth it.

Just went through this decision last month for our 5075E. We ended up going with JE Brokerage's extended warranty because:

  1. It covered the GPS/auto-steer system (lots of third-party warranties exclude precision ag gear)
  2. No deductible for dealership repairs ($100 for mobile service, which is fair)
  3. Coverage transfers if we sell the machine, which helps resale value

One phone call and they emailed the paperwork same day. Super smooth process.

As a mechanic with 25 years in the field, here's my take on the 6130M. Solid machine overall, but common issues after the factory warranty expires include:

  • Transmission control module failure (~$1,200 repair)
  • Hydraulic pump wear (~$2,500+ to rebuild)
  • DEF system problems (especially if maintenance is skipped)

If you get an extended warranty, make sure it explicitly covers these components and doesn't classify them as "wear items." In my experience, JE Brokerage's warranty is more comprehensive on these than most third-party options. Read the fine print carefully!

Adding my experience — I bought a 2020 John Deere 6120M through JE Brokerage last spring and opted for the 3-year extended warranty. Already used it once for a sensor issue that would've cost $600. Their service team was great: they coordinated with my local dealer, handled all the paperwork, and I just paid the $50 co-pay. For me, the peace of mind during planting season is worth every penny. Hope that helps, Sarah!

Sarah, we were in the same boat last year with a 2019 model. We ended up getting the extended warranty through JE Brokerage after comparing a few options. The deciding factor was that they use John Deere-certified shops for repairs — no fighting with the dealer about whether the warranty is accepted. The price was also better than the independent quotes. Good luck with your decision!

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone's great advice, I called JE Brokerage and got a quote for the extended warranty. It ended up being $50 cheaper per year than the best third-party quote I found, plus it covers the GPS system (which matters since we use it for precision planting). I went ahead and purchased the 3-year extension. Appreciate all the help — this community is the best! 🌽🚜
